* $310,000 Awarded for High School Outreach Efforts *

The UNT Office of Outreach and Community Involvement received a $310,000 Work-Study Student Mentorship Program Grant from the state to support Go Center and G-Force college outreach initiatives. The grant is the largest awarded to the 32 universities that received funding.

The program, established in 2000 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board with funding from the 80th Texas Legislature, helps address the goals of Closing the Gaps by 2015 by increasing student participation, student success, student research and increasing graduation rates of students being mentored. One of the critical goals of the program is to have 630,000 more students enrolled in Texas colleges and universities by 2015. In 2009, UNT’s Enrollment Management program earned the Texas Star award for its contributions in achieving these goals. In 2008, two UNT programs, the Next-Generation Course Redesign Project™ and Enrollment Management, were named finalists for the award. The Student Money Management Center program received the same award in 2007.

Outreach and Community Involvement (OCI)

Outreach coordinates initiatives and programs in partnership with local and regional school districts, businesses, and organizations relating to college awareness, recruitment and retention. UNT Outreach coordinates educational outreach programs, the Multicultural Scholastic Award Program, campus visits, G-Force and Go Center campaigns and workshops that seek to identify students, as early as elementary school (grades K-10) and to provide motivation, encouragement, and information needed to matriculate successfully through high school to higher education. These programs help to create a college-going culture and seek to empower students through the realization that a college education is completely within the realm of possibility.

Programs and Initiatives

UNT Outreach coordinates pre-collegiate outreach programs including Outreach ExPOs (college readiness visits to UNT), the G-Force and the Go Center initiative, Multicultural Scholastic Award Program, Champions of Outreach, and college enrollment workshops.

Programs and initiatives target students in grades 3-10 and provide motivation, encouragement and information needed to matriculate successfully through high school and on to post-secondary education.
